The Ololiuqui or Morning Glory Flower

Morning Glory or Ololiuqui as the ancient Mexica called it produce delicate, fragrant, and beautiful flowers that bloom from early summer all the way to when temperatures begin to significantly drop during autumn.

Morning Glories can come in many different colors such as magenta, white, pink, and violet-blue. The Ololiuqui flowers are white and known for their abundant scent and nectar that is said to produce amazing and medicinal honey.

The white variation of Morning Glory is also called Manto Blanco, meaning “white mantle” in Spanish. Their growth can spread over entire green areas quite easily, and it’s most common for the flowers to unfurl during early morning and close during the afternoon.

Because they are relatively easy to take care of, they are the sort of plant that is often chosen by gardening enthusiasts and manual workers who make a living out of floral arrangements.

The possible uses of Manto Blanco

Known for its historical significance and traditional use in indigenous rituals, Ololiuqui has been revered for centuries for its spiritual and medicinal properties.

The seeds contain a naturally occurring compound called lysergic acid amide (LSA), which is similar to the well-known psychedelic substance, LSD.

The morning glory seeds have been used for many other reasons than just recreational. Ololiúqui has been historically used historically  by Aztec priests in their ancient sacred rituals. The priests and shamans used it as a divinatory tool and believed it opened the spiritual realm to communicate with their ancestors.

Apart from the Aztec or Mexica many other tribes in the lands that became known as Mexico also used these seeds in their shamanic healings and journeys. The first colonials and priests feard these local healers and their powers and as such prohibited the use of plants like Ololiuqui.

They banned the seeds and introduced heavy penalties for the indigenous peoples that did use it branding them as criminals and devil worshippers introducing harsh punishments for users

In terms of medicinal benefits and usage, Morning Glory flowers have been used by healers of distinct cultures, mainly Central and South American, to treat high blood pressure and heart diseases, as well as diabetes and even to remove lice from hair and scalp.

Researches of medical fields have been, as of lately, shown increasing interest in the properties of Ipomoea plants.

The seeds that germinate into the flowers of this genus carry antifungal, antispasmodic, laxative, and diuretic agents, along with other health related beneficial properties that may act as blood purifiers, anti-inflammatory, and deobstruent agents. So far there have been no conclusive results and as such these are just observational conclusions.
